DC Air Conditioner, models SMB05 and SMB14

The Marvair 12 and 24 Volt DC air conditioners are designed to operate directly from a DC power supply - an inverter is not required. The 12 VDC unit, model SMB05, has a nominal cooling capacity of 5,000 BTUH and is ideal for sailboats, powerboats or any place cooling is desired. The 24 VDC unit, model SMB14, has a variable capacity of 7,000 to 14,000 BTUH. The unit can be operated directly from batteries or dockside and, with the appropriate charging device, run from a conventional 12 VDC system.

The DC units provide an ideal solution for cooling when off-grid or renewable power sources, e.g., solar photovoltaic (PV), fuel cells or wind generated electricity are available. The units are controlled by Marvair Marine's exclusive direct current o-LED thermostat and uses the environmentally friendly, non-ozone depleting R-134a refrigerant.

12 VDC SMB05

• Nominal capacity of 5,000 BTUH.

• Including a small circulating pump, draws a nominal 30 amps.

• Single duct discharge using Box Blower™, a high static motorized impeller.

• Operating voltage: 9 V DC to 17 V DC.

• Remotely mounted control box saves space with a 4' ft. (137 cm) heavy duty cable.

24 V DC SMB14

• Variable capacity of 7,000 to 14,000 BTUH.

• Draws 13 to 32 amps, excluding the circulating pump.

• Top and side duct discharge using Box Blower™, a high static motorized impeller.

• Remotely mounted control box saves space with a 4' ft. (137 cm) heavy duty cable.

Brushless DC compressor motor

Rather than using a conventional AC compressor, the Marvair Marine units use a unique brushless DC motor for the compressor motor. This permits the unit to operate directly from DC power and eliminates the need for an inverter.

There are several advantages to using the brushless DC motor. Conventional AC compressors have a surge or spike on each startup that is typically 5 to 6 times the running amps. In order to provide the amperage for start-up, the inverter must be sized significantly larger than what is required for the normal running current. In addition to increased cost, oversizing the inverter dramatically decreases its conversion efficiency. This loss of efficiency is directly converted to heat, adding to the cooling requirement in the cabin.
